Brad & Krisie’s Gwynne wedding

Two of my favorite people in the world tied the knot just outside of Gwynne, Alberta June 27.

My old college pal and neighbour Fubu (known to his family and non-college friends as Brad)  married Krisie. I’ve known Fubu a long time – 11 years – and I couldn’t be more sure that THIS woman, the amazing Krisie, is the absolute perfect person on the planet for him. Krisie’s beautiful, sweet, kind and wonderful daughter Terrany is certainly just the icing on the cake!

The wedding and reception took place at the Central Community Hall north of Gwynne, very close to the couple’s home. Gwynne is a village located between Camrose and Wetaskiwin, overlooking a beautiful valley. It was the perfect setting for the ideal country wedding.

The day started off blustery and cold, but by wedding time, it was sunny and hot. Krisie began the transformation at Havoc Hairstyling in Wetaskiwin, and then it was off to a neighbor’s house to get dressed. Make up for all the girls was done by the lovely and talented Charlene Parrott.

The girls rode a school bus – that ubiquitous symbol of rural life – from the dress-up location to the Central Community Hall. Amongst about 275 of their closest family and friends, Fubu and Krisie said their vows, exchanged rings, and each made promises to Terrany as part of the service. Terrany also made promises to Fubu. It was the first time I’d seen that particular ceremony, and it was a tear-jerker for me – watching them promise to accept, love and support each other as individuals and as a family. I just adore them all so darn much!

After the ceremony and some family photos at the hall, the wedding party and myself climbed aboard the bus again – now in full swing as a PARTY BUS! – and went through the best man’s fields to a spot overlooking beautiful Coal Lake. Just a hundred feet or so from where Fubu asked Krisie to marry him, we did the wedding party photos, and then we walked down to the exact spot where Fubu proposed for the couples pictures. It was a gorgeous spot!

Then it was time to party! Back to the hall for supper and drinks and dancing and laughter. One of my favorite things about Fubu has always been his smile and chuckle (now I know he gets those from his dad), and Krisie has a big smile and laugh to match her new husband’s. I see a bright and happy future full of laughter ahead of them!

Country weddings are THE BEST. Country folk just know how to party, and with the high percentage of Saskatchewanites present, the Pilsner was flowing, many guests were camping out at the hall or at the couple’s acreage overnight, and everyone was ready to have a great time! The big white tent was full to the brim with people chatting and eating and drinking and visiting; old timers were sharing memories, kids were dancing, women were bragging about their babies and complaining good-naturedly about their husbands. It was your average, ordinary, absolutely extraordinary country wedding. There’s really no other kind! (DJ service was by Blue Moon – they did a great job!)

Krisie and Fubu, I’ve been thinking all week about what I wanted to write in this blog about your wedding, but I can’t seem to capture the awesomeness of your wedding day. I can’t remember the last time I got emotional at a wedding – it’s been a long time! – but I was all choked up at yours. To see you joined together permanently as a family, with the love between you three, it was a very special thing. To witness the happiness of your families as your relationship was made official, to see the Nelson side welcome not only Krisie but Terrany with wide open arms, and to see the Dufault side happily joking with Fubu. To see Fubu stealing babies all night and knowing that he now has a beautiful little girl of his own to love and cherish forever - and if I’m any judge of the future, more to come soon! – it just made me all happy inside. Krisie, you are an amazing person, an inspiration as a mother and in so many other ways. Fubu, I’ve always adored you and I am so happy that you’ve found Krisie! Terrany, you are the most wonderful kid I’ve ever met. Seriously. You’re so beautiful, so kind, so amazing!! Never forget that! If my daughter turns out to be even one-tenth as cool as you, I will be a happy mom.

I am so happy to have been a part of your wedding day!! Thank you so much for choosing me, and I can’t wait to see you guys again! Don’t be strangers!
