Cheap, easy and environmentally friendly … and customizable!

Get yourself some wheat … available from any farmer, feed/livestock store or bulk foods store.

Wheat

I got my wheat from my husband’s grain bin.

Get yourself a bunch of pots that match your wedding colors, or  glass containers, or plain pots that you’ll decorate yourself. Hit the dollar store, or if you’re not getting married until 2010, look for end-of-season clearance sales! (I got the pots shown at Canadian Tire; they’re made of some kind of eco-friendly renewable crop. I can’t remember what and I tossed the sticker.)

Fill your pots most of the way with potting soil. Then cover soil with an even layer of wheat - you want to sow it thickly so that it will grow in thick, gorgeous bunches. Then, add another 1-2 cm of soil and water well. I covered my pots with plastic wrap and removed it once the wheat began to poke through the surface of the soil.

Continue to water as needed and in about six days, you’ll have this …

At nine days growth, I decided to bling a pot up a bit to see what it would look like …

I used mirror pieces from an old windchime (originally bought at the dollar store) and some glass beads. The ribbon is grosgrain and is from Mayer’s Packaging (www.mayerspackaging.com). Add some glue from my trusty hot glue gun, and oila!

One extra note: your wheat may not be as awesome as my wheat. My farmer husband tells me his wheat is some kind of crazy, fast-germinating, fast-growing variety. So, if you don’t know what variety your wheat is, or how old it is, you will want to do a trial run a month or more before your wedding/event to see how long it takes to achieve the desired height.
