Public Notice: I will not be booking any weddings for between March 1, 2012 and October 1, 2012 – because we’re expecting our second baby in late March! I am booking weddings for late fall/winter 2012, and of course, for 2013 weddings!

My maternity leave from portraits will last from baby’s arrival until May 15, 2012. I will be accepting spring & summer portrait bookings after May 15, however, these sessions will ONLY be available at the studio/our beautiful farm until after October 1, 2012.

Please plan accordingly!

Rhubarb jam recipe

I have been busy canning the last couple of days, and I thought I’d share my recipe for straight rhubarb jam, as it’s actually one of the harder jam recipes to find! There are lots of recipes out there that call for the addition of strawberries, oranges, apples or other ingredients, but I wanted one with just plain rhubarb. This is the recipe I found and made this morning (I adjusted it a little), and it’s delicious!

Rhubarb Jam
Makes +/- 6 cups of jam.

4.5 cups rhubarb
1 cup water
5 cups sugar
1 box pectin

Optional: a few drops of red food coloring

Boil water and rhubarb until it turns to mush. If desired, or if you’re using a greener variety of rhubarb, add a few drops of red food coloring. Add pectin and return to boil; add sugar and return to hard boil and boil for 1 minute. Remove from heat and can and process as usual. (As usual = hard boil 10 minutes + elevation adjustment time, remove lid and let sit for 5 minutes, then remove jars from water and let sit, undisturbed, for 24 hours.)

Peonies

My favorite flowers that come up in my garden every year – peonies. We have white, pale pink and dark pink ones, and during peony season, I have bouquets of them in the house. What’s not to love about a big, puffy flower that smells great?

Meet Trixie!

What adult doesn’t like to buy themselves a Christmas gift? Mine, to myself, this year, is Trixie.

Trixie is a two year old pug/boston terrier cross. It was love at first snort/grunt. I’m so happy that she’s joined our menagerie.

Isn’t she the cutest little fugly thing ever? I love her.

Random studio bits …

These are some awesome fabrics I got off eBay for the area I’ve so classily named “the naked girl section” – the dressing room and boudoir room.

And these are some more awesome eBay finds, fun fabrics for the meeting room!

This is the wallpaper that will go on the feature wall in the boudoir room. Awesome, yes? Yes.

And this is one of our “baby” foxes. Each year, a pair of foxes takes up residence in our yard, under an old building. This year, they had four kits – two black and two red. Very cool! They’re all grown up now and they delight in running around tormenting the dogs. This is a shot I grabbed of one of the blacks the other day, when I was actually out shooting a car … anyway, these so-called silver foxes are actually quite rare. Vermilion, Alberta – kittens!

Our friendly neighborhood barn cat had kittens on the night of the 23rd – in the flower bed in front of the window, incidentally. It was a cold night, so momma and her kittens have now taken up residence in our bathtub. But aren’t they cute? Five grey kitties, three girls, two boys.

My daughter is THRILLED!

I’m taking advantage of the slower pace of the holiday season to do my favorite thing: snuggle my little girl. Here she is in her flannel pajamas, curled up in a fleece blanket, watching a movie. Who can resist?
